Ten years ago, Hot Dogs, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades released on Steam. It was the heyday of VR back in 2016: the HTC Vive had just released the same month after the announcement back in 2015 and it was one of the pioneers of VR gaming alongside Pavlov VR, Rec Room, Vivecraft, Compound, Job Simulator and a whole lot more. It never seems like you feel nostalgic for anything in the moment until it's long gone.

I got my VR headset I think somewhere around the start of 2017. I had been stuck with a very crappy PC for the longest time up until then so getting an upgraded computer as well as VR to boot opened up a whole new world for me. All these games felt like playful prototypes and it wasn't clear where everything would be headed. It was abundantly clear that it wasn't going to replace PC gaming but a lot of people were very vocal about it just being a fad and a waste of money. In their defense, they weren't entirely wrong. VR games have mostly fallen off today and most of their uses are for immersive social platforms like VRChat.

Something that hasn't fallen off however, is H3VR. Ten entire years of updates. While things did slow down after the first three years (I still miss the original Rise of the Rotweiners from Halloween 2017) it's pretty damn amazing that Anton has been going at it for so long. Apparently there should be an update for the game today but as of writing I haven't checked it out yet.

Maybe I should check out the modding scene. I don't know why I've been putting that off for so long.

This has been kind of a ramble post, but I couldn't resist. Can't believe one of my fondest VR games just turned ten years old. I wonder how I'll feel about it in another ten years from now. Maybe I'll be nostalgic for this blog?
